Tan Kah Kee, a well-known patriot and overseas Chinese leader, established iamen University in 1921. It was China’s first foreign Chinese-founded university. Xiamen University has gathered a wealth of expertise in providing educational programs over the past ninety years, and has demonstrated its unique characteristics in delivering them. Xiamen University, which offers a reasonably wide range of educational programs and has a large international presence, has developed a strong faculty and staff.
Xiamen University has produced approximately 200,000 undergraduates and graduates for the country since its foundation, as well as more than 60 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) who studied or worked there. There is a graduate school, 25 schools with 64 departments, and ten research institutions and research centres at Xiamen University. The institution provides 82 undergraduate programmes, 279 graduate programmes, and 185 PhD programmes, with 26 Doctoral degrees in first-class subjects and 40 Master degrees in first-class disciplines. A total of 14 subjects have been evaluated and designated as “national important disciplines.”

Accommodation in Xiamen University
- All rooms in the foreign student flats on the Siming and Xiang’an campuses are furnished with a private bathroom, an air conditioner, internet access points, a common washing machine, and other facilities.
- The Siming Campus has 4-person rooms with daily rates ranging from RMB 8 to RMB 50 per bed.
- Single or double rooms are available, with daily lodging prices ranging from RMB 25 to RMB 100 per bed.
- On the Xiang’an Campus, students will be housed in suites, each of which has four double rooms.
- Per academic year, the accommodation charge ranges from RMB 2,000 to RMB 4,000 per individual. Fees for on-campus housing are subject to change pending clearance by pricing regulators.
- Newly admitted students can apply for on-campus housing at XMU’s Student Dormitory Administration Office.
