About University of Malaya - Malaysia
The University of Malaya, abbreviated UM, is a public research university in Malaysia. It is said to be Malaysia’s oldest and most prestigious university. Raffles College and King Edward VII College of Medicine merged to form it in Singapore in 1949. The university’s rapid growth during its first decade resulted in the establishment of two autonomous divisions in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, respectively. In Times Higher Education’s world university rankings, the university was ranked between 301 and 350.
The University of Malaya was divided into two divisions in 1959. In 1960, the governments of the two territories expressed a desire to elevate the Divisions to the status of a national university. The legislation was enacted in 1961, and the University of Malaya was founded on January 1, 1962. The Singapore campus, on the other hand, became the University of Singapore. The University of Malaya was granted autonomy by the Ministry of Higher Education in 2012.

Accommodation in University of Malaya
- There are 13 residential colleges on campus that provide on-campus housing to UM students, including international students through the UM Student Exchange Program.
- More than 11,000 students can be accommodated in these residential colleges. Some residential colleges offer food and lodging to students for RM4.50 to RM12 per day.
- The others only provide housing, which ranges from RM150 to RM360 per student per month. It is determined by the halls chosen by the students.
