The Romanian medical care system has existed since the eighteenth century, with St. Spiridon Hospital (1757) in Iași being the most established in Moldavia and one of the largest in Romania. The Iași Surgery School was established on November 30, 1859. Iași University of Medicine and Pharmacy, one of Romania’s oldest educational institutions, was founded in 1879 as the Faculty of Medicine, which was later merged into the University of Iași. In 1948, the Medical School joined forces with the Schools of Pharmacy and Dentistry to form the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy (later called “Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy” in 1991).
