About Belarusian State Medical University
The university’s history begins in 1921, with the announcement of the inauguration of the Belarusian State University, which at the time featured a medical faculty that was later split and established as an independent educational institution in 1930.
The first doctoral graduation took place in 1925. On the basis of the faculty, the Belarusian Medical Institute was created in 1930. The Institute did not function during World War II, from June 1941 to October 1943, and subsequently restarted operations in Yaroslavl (Russian Federation). In 1944, the Belarusian Medical Institute relocated to its original Minsk location.
The faculty of dentistry was founded in 1960. Teaching at the pediatric and sanitary-hygienic faculties began in 1964. In 1967, a medical school for international students was established.
By resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1971, the Minsk State Medical Institute was given the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for its contributions in training, development of healthcare, and medical science.
As part of the institute, the military medical faculty was founded in 1995. The Institute was designated as the Republic of Belarus’s main medical university in 2001. [requires citation] The pharmacy faculty was established in September 2011.
